What does the Bible really say about "gay" marriage?

In the wake of same-sex marriage in New York, the Huffington Post has released numerous articles covering the news. Today, they released an article written by Lee Jefferson about the immense coverage NY marriage has received as well as the Bible's role in the "gay" marriage battle.

Jefferson said:
The media focus is a double-edged sword for the issue of same-sex marriage: it exhibits an enlightening progress in our culture concerning the LGBT community, and it also gives voice to the cacophonous opposition, not only directed towards same-sex unions but towards same-sex orientation itself.
That opposition, he said, often uses the Bible to illustrate their anti-gay message. For example, they may say homosexuality is wrong because the Bible "says" it is wrong. But does it really "say" that? Regardless, should we develop political stances based upon what the Bible "says" and/or how we interpret it?

He continues:
If anything, this exercise questions whether we should develop stances based upon what the Bible "says." Simply put, the Bible is a complicated collection of documents that was never meant to "speak" to our contemporary situation, but groups often speak through the lens of the Bible and lob textual grenades on issues like same-sex marriage.
He goes on to list four main arguments against the government using the Bible or religion to withhold equal rights from gay and lesbian Americans. While this may not be a new topic, Jefferson really lays the argument out neatly:
  1. The institution of marriage is a secular and social institution.
  2. The Bible does not clearly endorse one form of marriage over another.
  3. The Biblical arguments against same-sex marriage are not proffered from texts that deal with marriage, but from texts that purportedly deal with same-sex orientation.
  4. Any reference to same-sex practice by a Biblical writer or a Greco-Roman writer has no knowledge or understanding of the concept of "same-sex orientation."
The Bible, like any ancient document, has went through numerous translations and has come in many different forms. We simply should not withhold equal rights from a significant portion of the population based on what we "think" the Bible "says" or means.
