Obama Signs First Federal Gay Rights Law

President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law this past week, marking the FIRST FEDERAL GAY RIGHTS LAW. This is long overdue, and I hope that more gay rights laws are to follow.

The law allows federal authorities to get involved with cases of violent crimes based on the victim’s actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and disability. Local law enforcement officers can also receive federal aid for training, prevention, and investigation.

Obama also just lifted the ban on international travel for people who are HIV-positive.
